ABOUT
We use our hands to say a lot of things: from “hi there” to “I missed you” and “oh no she didn’t!” For a large part of the American population, ASL is used to communicate and understand the world around them. SIPP estimates indicate that approximately 10,000,000 American people are hard of hearing, and around 1,000,000 are functionally deaf. Other people primarily use sign language to communicate as well, like those who are mute, have autism, verbal apraxia, auditory processing disorder (APD), and those with traches.
We all talk with our hands. Why don’t we learn to COMMUNICATE with them? Let’s make a more inclusive and accessible future for everyone by including ASL in our National Academic Standards.
