CONCEPTUALIZATION
The world I wanted to make for this film had to be obvious in its symbolism due to its shortness. I had a very limited amount of time to get my message across, so I decided to use three easy-to-understand concepts: animals, shapes, and colors.
To represent the two genders succinctly, I chose bears for boys (stereotypically strong, large, and commanding) and birds for girls (small, dainty, and pretty). This presented me with a clear in-between animal that isn’t quite a bear nor a bird: a bat!
STORYBOARDING
In order to get the timing of each scene down, I drew a storyboard to block out what I wanted to happen and when. Here are some of my favorite boards!
One challenge I faced while doing this was making sure each caption was on-screen long enough for everyone to read, but not too long that it made the story slow.
DESIGN FRAME
The design frame is one fully-rendered frame that I made while storyboarding this short film. It helped me find a style that was efficient enough to make within the timeline. I used this frame as my guide for drawing every frame and background.
Making a design frame also brought me to the textures and colors that work best for the symbolism of the film. The color pallete is heavily inspired by the trans flag and the modern “gendered” colors of pink and blue.
